1. OPENING CEREMONY – Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407 was called to order at 1830 on 5 March 2019 by Commandant Steve Tracy. Pledge and Posting of Colors was conducted by Sergeant-at-Arms Joe Beam. Opening Prayer was conducted by Chaplain Mark Munger. Fifteen (15) regular members and one (1) guest were present.

2. ROLL CALL OF OFFICERS - Commandant: present, Senior Vice Commandant: present, Junior Vice Commandant: present, Sergeant-at-Arms: present, Adjutant: present, Paymaster: present, Past Commandant: present, Junior Past Commandant: present, Judge Advocate: present.

3. MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING – Minutes were given to members present and will be posted online.

4. CORRESPONDENCE – none.

5. REPORT OF PAYMASTER – The Paymaster reported the February 2019 balances and transactions. A motion was made by Past Commandant Tim Manchester to accept by the report pending an audit and seconded by Senior Vice Commandant Paul Miethker.

6. REPORT OF MEMBER OR ANY FAMILY MEMBERS SICK OR IN DISTRESS –

(1) Chaplain Mark Munger reported Dorothy continues to improve.

7. REPORT OF OFFICERS –

(1) Sr. Vice Commandant Paul Miethker: Nothing to report.

(2) Jr. Vice Bob Shannon: Nothing to report.

(3.) Adjutant Frances Hayden: Nothing to report.


8. REPORT OF STANDING COMMITTEES –

(1) Boy Scouts: Marine Pat Curley reported that the Boy Scouts are having an alumni rendezvous at Camp Sam Hatcher on 11 May 2019.

(2) Young Marines: Marine David Burger reported that on the Young Marines will be participating in a walk in Jacksonville on the 16th of March and in the Relay for Life in April. They may also conduct an Easter Egg Hut. Commandant reported that the unit award is still pending.

(3) Newsletter/Webmaster: (1) Past Commandant Tim Manchester reported the newsletter is published. Members should go to the website to view it as it is a large file. Commandant Tracy commented on how good it is.

9. REPORT OF SPECIAL COMMITTEES –

(1) Quilt Committee – The committee has three (3) quilts. If anyone knows of someone deserving a quilt, let the committee know. Sergeant Major Rooney’s wife really enjoys hers and appreciates it very much.

10. UNFINISHED BUSINESS –

(1) 5K Run – The run is progressing. However, the contact at Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation has not responded to the last email that Past Commandant Alex Nevgoloski Sr sent. He should hear something this week and be able to determine if the run will take place on the planned dated (13 April) and place (Coast Guard Road). If the venue falls apart, the mayor of Pine Knoll Shores has suggested a sunset run there in September. Salter Path is another possibility. Past Commandant Alex Nevgoloski Sr will visit area businesses to seek donations of food, water and gator aid once the venue is confirmed. Bibs and t-shirts are locked on.

(2) Nominations were accepted for elected officers. Marine Don Brouchard nominated Steve Tracy for Commandant. Marine Luis Alers nominated Paul Miethker for Commandant. Sailor Paul Miethker nominated Luis Alers for Senior Vice. Marine Tim Manchester nominated Bob Shannon for Junior Vice and Tim Manchester nominated Mark Munger for Judge Advocate.

11. NEW BUSINESS –

(1) Past Commandant Tim Manchester reported that the manager of Lowes Food in Cape Carteret has suggested the detachment meet at the store for coffee. He will check out the facility this week. It was suggested that the detachment could try it out once a month.

(2) Past Commandant Tim Manchester reported that Pounds 143 and 370 will be having a joint growl on 20 April at the Swansboro Moose Lodge. The Growl will begin at 1200, with food being served at 1100.

(2) Marine Luis Alers reported that due to the passing of Congressman Walter Jones, the satellite offices in Jacksonville and Greenville are closed. Those needing to conduct business with the VA that would normally have been assisted by those offices, should use E-Benefits.

(3) Marine Pat Curley attended a Project Healing Waters event in San Antonio, Texas this past week. It was very informative. Locally, the project is looking for a new location as they have outgrown the Jacksonville location.

(4) Past Commandant Alex Nevgoloski Sr informed members that they are planning to move Sergeant Major Rooney’s wife from Wilmington to Swansboro.

1. OPENING CEREMONY – Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407 was called to order at 1830 on 5 February 2019 by Commandant Steve Tracy. 4. APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP – Marine James Munn was presented and accepted for membership.

5. CEREMONY OF INITIATION – Marine James Munn was sworn in as regular members.

8. REPORT OF PAYMASTER – The Paymaster reported the October 2018 balances and transactions. A motion was made by Senior Vice Commandant Paul M to accept the report pending an audit and seconded by Sailor Ray Smith.

9. REPORT OF MEMBER OR ANY FAMILY MEMBERS SICK OR IN DISTRESS –

(1) Chaplain Mark Munger reported Marine Dawn Rooth (member and wife of Paymaster Rob Rooth) suffered an injury to her feet and ankles. She is in the process of returning stateside. A card was passed around for signatures and will be mailed out by the adjutant.

10. REPORT OF OFFICERS –

(1) Sr. Vice Commandant Paul Miethker: Nothing to report.

(2) Jr. Vice Bob Shannon: We have 62 members, 20 regular, 26 life, and 9 associates. There are 7 not paid up. The total number of active members is 55.

11. REPORT OF STANDING COMMITTEES –

(1) Boy Scouts: Marine Pat Curley reported that the scouts have re-charted their districts and have a new chairman. Also, as of 1 February 2019, there is no longer a BSA but rather Scouts, BSA. Females have been integrated into the program. They have separate troops but will participate in all the activities as their male counterparts. There have been three troops formed in North Carolina. One in Wilson, one in Hubert, and one in Morehead City. Marine Corps League Swansboro may have the opportunity to honor one of the first female eagle scouts.

(2) Gunny Claus: Commandant Steve Tracy noted that Gunny Clause program has shut down for the season.

(3) Young Marines: Marine David Burger reported that on 1 February 2019, Young Marine Sergeant Jaiden McElye was presented the Silver Outstanding Cadet Medal by the Barbie LeBrun Otway Burns Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal by the Jay DeLoach New Bern Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.

(4) Newsletter/Webmaster: (1) Past Commandant Tim Manchester reported the newsletter is due to be published at the end of the month (February) and he needs input.

12. REPORT OF SPECIAL COMMITTEES –

13. UNFINISHED BUSINESS –

(1) 5K Run – The run is progressing. The initial venue has to be changed due to storm damage.

14. NEW BUSINESS –

(1) Chaplain Mark Munger suggested that the detachment form a stand-up color guard. If unable to do so as one detachment, one could be formed with the Jacksonville detachment.

(2) Jerry Brown thanked the detachment for the assistance given to he and his family to help them in recovering from the destruction of their home during Hurricane Florence. He also gave a progress report on the recovery.

(3) A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to the detachment from the Cherry Point Detachment for the assistance given to one of their members in recovery from the destruction of their home in Hurricane Florence.

(4) Vice Commandant Paul Miethker encouraged members to support the NCOA Pig Pickin being held Saturday, 9 February 2019 at the Swansboro Moose Lodge. He also reminded members of the NCOA Annual Award Ceremony being held 1 March 2019 in Jacksonville at Sywanyks and thanked the detachment for supporting the event.

(5) Marine Luis Alers informed the detachment that the VA will be in Wilmington 25, 26 and 27 April 2019 to review claims. New claims can be opened and current claims can be adjudicated.

1. OPENING CEREMONY – Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407 was called to order at 1830 on 6 November 2018 by Commandant Steve Tracy. Marine Dave Brown presented information regarding a Veterans Memorial Project. He was asked to take the lead on it by the Mayor of Swansboro. He is looking for volunteers to help in the development of the memorial.

6. MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING – Minutes were, emailed, posted online and copies distributed to members.

7. CORRESPONDENCE – Marine Pat Curley received correspondence from the Chamber of Commerce regarding a meeting at 1730 November 7th. Marine Ayers informed the members that the Chamber has a Military Affairs Committee and that their responsibilities include two main events: Family Appreciation Day and a military recognition meal in November. Commandant Tracy will attend the meeting.

8. REPORT OF PAYMASTER – The Paymaster reported the October 2018 balances and transactions. A motion was made by Junior Past Commandant Tim Manchester to accept the report pending an audit and seconded by Marine Don Bouchard. Commandant Steve Tracy reported that the detachment bought a freezer for the USO to replace one of the ones damaged due to Hurricane Florence.

9. REPORT OF MEMBER OR ANY FAMILY MEMBERS SICK OR IN DISTRESS –

(1) Chaplain Mark Munger knew of no members or their families who were sick or in distress. He encouraged members to report when these occur. (2) Commandant reported that Marine Mike Rooney’s wife is still in the rehabilitation facility in Hamstead and suggested that if any member was able to, they should visit her. She is in room 501.

10. REPORT OF OFFICERS –

(1) Sr. Vice Paul Miethker: Nothing to report.

(2) Jr. Vice Bob Shannon: We have 61 members, 20 regular, 25 life, and 9 associate. There are 7 not paid up. The total number of active members is 54.

(3.) Adjutant Frances Hayden: Requested that members turn in their volunteers hours monthly at the meeting.

(4) Acting Sergeant-at-Arms Alex Nevgoloski Sr.: Nothing to report.

11. REPORT OF STANDING COMMITTEES –

(1) Boy Scouts: Marine Pat Curley reported that the hurricane hurt the scouting program. It happened during their popcorn campaign. This is the time when they raise most of their funds. He also reported that beginning February 1st they will allow girls to join the troops, but they will be in separate troops. There may be an opportunity for the detachment to act as a charter organization for them.

(2) Toys for Tots (TFT): Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr. – He should be getting some information Thursday or Friday.

(3) Veterans Affairs Volunteer Service (VAVS): Past Commandant Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr. noted that if anyone has anything new to claim, they should get it in now. In January they will look at everything when a claim is submitted. This could result in a reduced rate, even if the veteran has had the rating for several years.

(4) Marines Helping Marines: Nothing to report.

(5) Gunny Claus: Commandant Steve Tracy noted that there are seven Gunny Clauses and 80 to 85 units. This is a 100% non-profit. Everything goes to the children. They have a goal of giving 1,000 bikes this year. Last year they gave 800. They will probably start November 30th and go through Christmas Day.

(6) Young Marines: Marine David Burger reported that they are participating in a 5K on Camp Johnson on October 27th, in the Veterans Day Parade, November 3rd and will be at a spaghetti dinner held at the VFW in Cedar Point on 11 November.

(7) Newsletter/Webmaster: (1) Past Commandant Tim Manchester reported the newsletter has not been published yet since he has not received input from three members. (2) Members do not have to wait until the deadline draws near to submit articles. (3) There will be an article in the newsletter regarding Tricare after the townhall meeting October 18th. (4) The edition after this will be in a new format. (5) The website and Facebook are doing well.

12. REPORT OF SPECIAL COMMITTEES –

(1) Scholarship Committee – Past Commandant Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr. reported for the committee. He said that they are considering doing two scholarships.

(2) Quilt Committee – (1) Commandant Steve Tracy reported that they have four quilts ready for giving. He also encouraged members to nominate deserving heroes that we may know of or hear of for the quilts. (2) Member Ken Studley has a sister who does quilts for veterans in another state. It might be advantageous for her to get up with the committee and look into swapping patterns. Marine Pat Curley suggested getting up with the Women Marines Association since they have several older members.

13. UNFINISHED BUSINESS –

(1) Marine Corps League recruiting table at Walmart – Commandant Steve Tracy said that we need to look at dates and that we might consider a table at Lowes Hardware in Cape Carteret.

(2) Marine Corps Birthday – Past Commandant Alex Nevgloski has tickets. Commandant Steve Tracy reminded members that if they do not have access to the base to let the League know so transportation can be arranged. The base pass office had been moved from the front gate to the Wilson gate.

(3) 5K Run – Nothing to report.

14. NEW BUSINESS –

(1) Belk Charity Days - Past Commandant Alex Nevgloski reported that we made $226 at last week’s sale, which included a $100 donation.

(2) Marine Corps took a major hit during Hurricane Florence. At least three medical clinics have been lost.

(3) Vice Commandant Paul Miethker added to the VAVS report by noting mental health and TBI issues are not covered in the new rating schedule. Veterans suffering from these problems need to be reviewed on a set schedule and if they are not then the loose their rating.

(4) Mid-East Assistant Vice Commandant Lee Walker told members about two fund raisers the Department of North Carolina is conducting. One is selling calendars. The last page of the calendars has a number. If that number is picked on the lottery (pick three), the owner of the calendar can win at a minimum $35.00. He gave Commandant Steve Tracy 25 calendars for the detachment to sell. The other fund raiser is a raffle for a gun. He had four tickets. They are now sold.

(5) Mid-East Assistant Vice Commandant Lee Walker informed the members that the next Department Convention will be held in Jacksonville, June 2019.

(6) Commandant of the Department of North Carolina Jeffery Jones reported that the department is in good shape.

There were 10 detachments affected by Hurricane Florence. Only three Marines lost their houses. Three Marines do not have insurance, one in Havelock, one in Hampstead, and one in Onslow County.

(7) Leaguers were challenged to conduct public fund raisers for victims of Hurricane Florence. The best way to recruit is to be seen doing good for others.

(8)  Maine Corps League Auxiliary Mid-East National Vice President Pat Walker reported that at the end of August they have a new up and running auxiliary unit. She also noted that Hickory will soon start a new unit with seven members.

9. REPORT OF MEMBER OR ANY FAMILY MEMBERS SICK OR UN-DISTRESS –

(1) Sergeant-at-Arms Joe Beam Jr is recovering from heart surgery. He is expected home tomorrow. (2) Commandant Steve Tracy reported that his sister is a living kidney donor and recently donated a kidney. She and the recipient are doing well. (3) Commandant Steve Tracy also reported that his mother has been taken off of some medicines and is doing much better.

(3) Judge Advocate Mark Munger: Stated that he needs the webmaster, Tim Manchester, to forward an electronic copy of the by-laws. We need to add scholarship potentials to the by-laws.

(5) Gunny Claus: Commandant Steve Tracy noted that there are seven Gunny Clauses and 80 to 85 units. This is a 100% non-profit. Everything goes to the children. They have a goal of giving 1,000 bikes this year. Last year they gave 800. They will probably start November 30th and go through Christmas Day.

(6) Young Marines: Marine David Burger reported that they are participating in a 5K on Camp Johnson on October 27th, in the Veterans Day Parade, November 3rd and will be at a spaghetti dinner held at the VFW in Cedar Point on 11 November.

(7) Newsletter/Webmaster: (1) Past Commandant Tim Manchester reported the newsletter has not been published yet since he has not received input from three members. (2) Members do not have to wait until the deadline draws near to submit articles. (3) There will be an article in the newsletter regarding Tricare after the townhall meeting October 18th. (4) The edition after this will be in a new format. (5) The website and Facebook are doing well.

(1) Scholarship Committee – Past Commandant Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr. reported for the committee. He said that they are considering doing two scholarships.

(2) Quilt Committee – (1) Commandant Steve Tracy reported that they have four quilts ready for giving. He also encouraged members to nominate deserving heroes that we may know of or hear of for the quilts. (2) Member Ken Studley has a sister who does quilts for veterans in another state. It might be advantageous for her to get up with the committee and look into swapping patterns. Marine Pat Curley suggested getting up with the Women Marines Association since they have several older members.

13. UNFINISHED BUSINESS –

(1) Marine Corps League recruiting table at Walmart – Commandant Steve Tracy said that we need to look at dates and that we might consider a table at Lowes Hardware in Cape Carteret.

(2) Marine Corps Birthday – Past Commandant Alex Nevgloski has tickets. Commandant Steve Tracy reminded members that if they do not have access to the base to let the League know so transportation can be arranged. The base pass office had been moved from the front gate to the Wilson gate.

(2) Marine Corps took a major hit during Hurricane Florence. At least three medical clinics have been lost.

(3) Vice Commandant Paul Miethker added to the VAVS report by noting mental health and TBI issues are not covered in the new rating schedule. Veterans suffering from these problems need to be reviewed on a set schedule and if they are not then the loose their rating.

(4) Mid-East Assistant Vice Commandant Lee Walker told members about two fund raisers the Department of North Carolina is conducting. One is selling calendars. The last page of the calendars has a number. If that number is picked on the lottery (pick three), the owner of the calendar can win at a minimum $35.00. He gave Commandant Steve Tracy 25 calendars for the detachment to sell. The other fund raiser is a raffle for a gun. He had four tickets. They are now sold.

(5) Mid-East Assistant Vice Commandant Lee Walker informed the members that the next Department Convention will be held in Jacksonville, June 2019.

(6) Commandant of the Department of North Carolina Jeffery Jones reported that the department is in good shape.

There were 10 detachments affected by Hurricane Florence. Only three Marines lost their houses. Three Marines do not have insurance, one in Havelock, one in Hampstead, and one in Onslow County.

(7) Leaguers were challenged to conduct public fund raisers for victims of Hurricane Florence. The best way to recruit is to be seen doing good for others.

(8) Maine Corps League Auxiliary Mid-East National Vice President Pat Walker reported that at the end of August they have a new up and running auxiliary unit. She also noted that Hickory will soon start a new unit with seven members.

1. OPENING CEREMONY – Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407 was called to order at 1830 on 4 September 2018 by Commandant Steve Tracy. Pledge and Posting of Colors was conducted by acting Sergeant-at-Arms Alex Nevgloski. Opening Prayer was conducted by Chaplain Mark Munger. (1) Sergeant-at-Arms Joe Beam Jr is recovering from heart surgery. He is expected home tomorrow. (2) Commandant Steve Tracy reported that his sister is a living kidney donor and recently donated a kidney. She and the recipient are doing well. (3) Commandant Steve Tracy also reported that his mother has been taken off of some medicines and is doing much better.

(1) Boy Scouts: Marine Pat Curley reported that he has a request for the department to present an Outstanding Citizen award at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor next Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at the St James Church in Newport at 1830. He has the certificate but needs someone to present it. Commandant Steve Tracy volunteered to do so.

(2) Toys for Tots (TFT): Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr. – He should be getting some information Thursday or Friday.

(3) Veterans Affairs Volunteer Service (VAVS): Past Commandant Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr. noted that if anyone has anything new to claim, they should get it in now. In January they will look at everything when a claim is submitted. This could result in a reduced rate, even if the veteran has had the rating for several years.

(1) Past Commandant Tim Manchester’s father passed away. The detachment sent flowers and cards were also sent. Past Commandant Tim Manchester thanked the League for their support.

(2) SgtMaj Mike Rooney’s wife is in Woodbury Wellness Center in Hamstead for rehabilitation. She should be home within about 30 days. Once she is home she may have a relapse since she does not do well in following the doctor’s orders. Past Commandant Alex Nevgloski Sr.and Senior Vice Paul Miethker have visited the SgtMaj and say he has lost about 20/25 pounds because he doesn’t cook.

(7) Newsletter/Webmaster: Past Commandant Tim Manchester reported the newsletter is due the end of August. Input is needed and should be emailed to the Adjudant who will then forward them to the webmaster. Anyone can submit items, but the Commandant, Senior and Junior Vice and the VAVS have sections that need submissions.

The winner of the newsletter competition will be announced at the National Convention.

12. REPORT OF SPECIAL COMMITTEES –

(1) Scholarship Committee – Marine Nevgloski Sr. reported for the committee. There are four area schools that can be granted the scholarship(s). Decisions need to be made as to whether to divide money between the schools and how much. But first, it has to be written into the bylaws.

(2) Quilt Committee – No report.

13. UNFINISHED BUSINESS –

(1) MCL Swansboro recruiting table at the Swansboro Walmart. Tabled until the return of Commandant Steve Tracy and cooler weather.

(2) Marine Corps Ball – Past Commandant Tim Manchester suggested that the detachment join the Regiment of Retired Marines at their birthday ball. The cost is $55.00. It will be held at the Geottge Memorial Field House on 10 November. The USO will have tickets on sale at the end of the month. Marine Nevgloski Sr. volunteered to take charge of getting tickets for the detachment so that members can sit together. He also suggested getting a van to transport those who are not able to get on base.

14. NEW BUSINESS –

(1) Belk Fund Raiser – Marine Nevgloski Sr. distributed about 25 tickets to members to sell as it is not a good time to set up a table at Belk’s with so many members out of town. With that being the case the detachment will have to concentrate more on the pancake breakfasts. All members will need to put forth their best efforts to help as this affects our scholarship fund.

(2) 5K Run – Marine Nevgloski Sr. reported that Marine Mike Marion will set everything up. He will probably talk to the detachment in the September or October meeting. It will be in Salter Path on the beach and cost $30/35 and also be available as a virtue run. A Christmas run would be nice, but if it can’t be organized by then, April would be the next preferred time frame.

(3) Dues – Junior Vice Bob Shannon reported that we are not doing well with membership dues. Five members paid tonight, 20 to 25 members still need to pay.

(4) Awards – Past Commandant Tim Manchester reported that the detachment received two streamer for 100% participation, (one for the Department and one for Division), two Certificates of Participation, (one for the website and one for the Facebook page) and the 2018 Top Notch Award for the Detachment website.

(5) Supplies - Marine Nevgloski Sr. reported that there will be a ship’s store at the convention.

(6) Marine for Life – Marine Mark Munger reported that Marine for Life and the Marine Corps will be working together to help transitioning Marines and connecting them to detachments near their homes.

(7) Dental and Vision – Open enrollment will be 10 November to 12 December 2018.

Most of the offices are unopposed and as no other members noted that they were going, Junior Past Commandant Tim Manchester will represent the Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407 and cast one vote for each office.

He also noted that Venturing Summit and Sea Scouts Awards are not presented by the Marine Corps League and that the Auxiliary presents to the Girl Scouts. (6) Young Marines: Dana Cozzens – Absent. Marine Pat Curley suggested that at least one Young Marine parent attend a meeting. Junior Past Commandant Tim Manchester informed members that two new advisors have been appointed. He will endeavor to learn who they are.

(7) Newsletter/Webmaster: Tim Manchester reported that a lot of people have visited the web site and that the Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407 Newsletter the “Guidon” is published and has been submitted to the National competition. Senior Past Commandant Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr. suggested that a website competition, similar to the newsletter competition, be started.

13. UNFINISHED BUSINESS –

(1) MCL Swansboro recruiting table at the Swansboro Walmart. Tabled until the fall/August.

14. NEW BUSINESS –

(1) Scholarship – Commandant Steve Tracy suggested that a committee be formed to determine the details for a scholarship to be awarded by the detachment. Senior Past Commandant Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr. moved that such a committee be formed. It was seconded by Marine Richard Gorton. The committee will consist of Senior Past Commandant Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr., Sergeant-at-Arms Joe Beam Jr. and Associate Member Jennifer Manchester.

(2) 5K Recon Run – Commandant Steve Tracy proposed that the detachment sponsor a 5K run as a fundraiser. It could be an annual event that would bring in money from registrations and advertising. Marine Mike Marion has experience in these types of events. The proposal is tabled pending obtaining specifics needed from Marine Mike Marion.

(3) Competition Shooting Team - Commandant Steve Tracy believes this could get more younger Marines involved with the detachment.

(4) Hero Quilts – Hero Quilts started out to be for Wounded Warriors, but they can be given to older veterans who are in hospitals and other facilities as well as those living at home. A committee could be established. Recommendations of recipients would be submitted to the committee twice a year. The committee would choose the recipients. Marine Pat Curley, Associate Member Darlene Tracy and Associate Member Jennifer Manchester will serve on the committee.

(5) Budget Committee – Commandant Steve Tracy recommended that a budget committee be established. Members felt that no change to the current methods is needed. The Paymaster, along with the leadership, would be sufficient for the needs of the Detachment.

(6) Barbeque – Commandant Steve Tracy recommended that the detachment have a barbecue get-together in the fall. It would be for members and guests and could be held in a park or at someone’s home.

(7) Marine Corps Birthday – Commandant Steve Tracy asked if the detachment wants to do their own Marine Corps Ball again this year. Other options include doing one with the Division or joining other veteran groups for a Veterans’ Ball. A couple of venues will be investigated and discussion will continue in the August meeting.

(7) Sr. Vice Paul Miethker stated that some senior Marines who cannot reenlist are having medical boards. If they are not approved, they will have to pay back college monies that they were awarded for their children.

(8) The Marine Corps Credit Union on base has moved next to a smaller building next to Starbucks.

(9) Retirees on the current dental/vision programs must choose from 11 different dental and 8 vision programs between 12 November to 10 December, 2018. The current plans stop December 31, 2018. If no choice is made by the retiree, they will not be able to enroll until the next enrollment period in the fall of 2019. Information is in the newsletter.

(10) Paymaster Rob Rooth went to Wounded Warrior Spring Bash, 16 May 2018. He went as a representative of the Credit Union. He would like to go as a representative of the Marine Corps League in the future. The League could purchase drinks or something else for the bash.

(1) Spring Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser: Marine Steve Tracy reported that the Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser held on 24 March 2018, at St. Peter’s By The Sea Episcopal Church was success. Ninety (90) meals were delivered and there was steady number of supporters all during the breakfast timeframe.

(2) Belk Charity Day Fundraiser: Past Commandant, Alex “Gunner” Nevgloski Sr. reported that the started 29 March 2018. The Detachment had set up twice so far at Belk in Morehead City and both times were very successful fundraisers. All members are encouraged to sell tickets and help man the table at Belk during our time frame.

8. REPORT OF PAYMASTER – The Paymaster reported January 2018 balances and transactions. A motion was made by Judge Advocate Luis Alers to accept the report and seconded by Corpsman Ray Smith, pending an audit.

9. REPORT OF MEMBER OR ANY FAMILY MEMBERS SICK OR UN-DISTRESS –

(1) Marian Rooney wife of MCL member Mike Rooney was taken to the Camp Lejeune Medical Center by ambulance last Thursday evening. She is currently home and has twenty-four (24) hour nursing care. She is in failing health and very weak. Please keep her and Mike in your prayers.

(2) Corpsman Ray Smith will have an operation 14 February 2018.

(5) Gunny Claus: The Gunny Claus Program was briefed to the members. Eighty-seven (87) units were visited and over seventeen thousand (17,000) children were seen. Marine John Erwin was the newest Gunny Claus for the 2017 program.

(7) Newsletter/Webmaster: Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407 Newsletter the “Guidon” will be published at the end of the month. If members have an article they would like added please email it to the Newsletter Editor.

14. NEW BUSINESS –

(1) BELK Charity Day Sale.

(2) Spring Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser. The event will be scheduled for a date to be determined in March 2018. Marine Steve Tracy will be the Chairperson for the event.

(3) MCL Swansboro Officer Elections - Nominations of proposed officers shall be made between 1 March through 3 April 2018. Nominees must accept nomination prior to their names being placed on the ballot. We will vote on elected Officers at the 3 April 2018 meeting. Newly elected Officers will then accept nominations of appointed Officers. Elected and appointed Officers will be installed at the monthly meeting 1 May 2018.

(4) MCL Swansboro recruiting table at the Swansboro Walmart. Members voted to set up a display table outside the Swansboro Walmart when the weather warms up.

15. GOOD OF THE LEAGUE –

(1) Swansboro Detachment will be hosting a joint Pound #370 and #143 Growl on 17 February 2018.

(2) Next raffle is an AR-15 to be given out at the DoNC 2018 Summer Convention.

(3) Change for Children, donated at the MCL National Convention.

(4) Spring 2018 DoNC Membership Meeting – April 20th -21st hosted by Sgt WE Plueddemann (formerly Down East) Detachment #1186, Greenville Convention 2018.
